FAQ's
administrative
Do I have to have an API key to use the widgets?
Yes, whether your integrating the widgets into your site or simply dropping them into your blog you’ll need an API key. If you use the one of the automatic deployments to your blog (i.e. to Blogger, Typepad, etc.) then one will be generated automatically for you. Otherwise you must register for a key here.
How can I protect my key from being stolen?
The best way is to limit the web site domain which can make calls back to our services. This prevents people on other web sites from making calls using your key. To limit the domain go to http://admin.yolink.com/yoadmin/domain.jsp and use the form presented there to limit the domains your keys can be used against.
If you think someone else is using your key contact yolink.support@yolink.com and we’ll get you a new one.
Can I downgrade my API tier once I’ve purchased a higher tier?
Yes, but if your current API usage for the month exceeds the upper limit for the new tier you’ll still be billed at the higher rate. The lower rate will take effect on the following month.
Technical
Can I access web services directly or do I have to use the widgets?
The widgets are meant to provide a quick and easy path to get yolink integrated into your site or application, but you’re free to use the services directly and modify the widgets to suit your purposes.
Are the widgets compatible with all web sites?
We’ve made all efforts to ensure all of the widgets work cleanly with as many sites and JavaScript frameworks as possible. Internally they employ jQuery for many of their mechanics, but the library and the widgets have been placed in a distinct namespace so you will not encounter conflicts with your own jQuery or JavaScript libraries. Still, the web is a big place, so if you do find a conflict please contact yolink.support@yolink.com with details on what you’re seeing and we’ll help get it resolved.
Which widget should I choose for my web site?
The three basic widgets all have the same basic functionality but differ in presentation. The embedded widget provides you complete control over how the search is initiated, which additional sharing features to use and where to present them. The toolbar and form widgets manage all of the presentation for you, but differ in the placement of the widget. The toolbar can be placed on any of the four edges of the screen, and the form can be placed anywhere in the page.
Can I customize the styles used in the widgets, results, etc.?
Yes, all of the look and feel for the widgets, results, and dialogs can be overridden by defining your own properties for CSS classes used in the widgets. Each item defines a specific override class which allows you to tweak the look of all of the yolink content injected into your page.
You have custom widgets for <blog-engine-X>? Do you have a custom widget for <blog-engine-Y>?
The standard widgets can be integrated into any blog, but we’ve put together custom versions for Blogger, Typepad and other engines to allow you to add yolink to your blog in a single click. If you’ve got another blog engine or framework where you’d like to see yolink integrated then please contact us and let us know about it.
